罗素先生坐镇辛辛那提大众乐团,监制、指导乐团在音乐大厅、塔夫特剧院以及河湾音乐中心的表演,每次演出均座无虚席;此外,他还担任乐团在大辛辛那提地区、全国乃至全球表演中的指挥---作为音乐大使为辛辛那提地区作宣传,帮助传播该地区作为世界知名音乐中心的声誉。他是乐团“古典之源”系列的主创者,也是流行乐曲家庭音乐会系列的指挥,同时在每年劳军义演辛辛那提音乐节担任指挥,与芝加哥交响乐团音乐总监路易斯?兰格里合作,打造了享誉世界的“光之城”演出,已经连续演出四个夏季,一直广受欢迎。目前罗素先生正与多位音乐人开展合作,包括艾瑞莎·弗兰克林、艾米·格兰特、文斯·基尔、布莱恩?史铎克?米歇尔、安娜·汉普顿·卡勒韦、乔治·武井、梅根·希尔提、史蒂夫·马丁、伊迪·布凯尔、峡谷巡警乐队、布莱恩·威尔森以及杰森·亚历山大。在罗素先生的领导下,辛辛那提大众乐团一如既往保持发扬了自身的优秀成绩,创作的作品包括“回乡音乐会”(2012)、“超级英雄”(2013)、“动物狂欢节”(2014)、以及首张流行乐曲实况录制专辑,“美国原声”(2015),随后在2018年又录制了“美国原声2”。自2016年起,罗素先生开始担任大众乐团全新视频系列“美国音乐之声”的指挥,这是与辛辛那提公共电视台合作打造的一款录音实况演出,通过YouTube向全世界传播大众乐团表演的独特魅力。2014年12月罗素先生带领辛辛那提大众乐团首次开展弗罗里达巡演,2017年3月带领乐团开展第六次亚洲流行乐团巡演,在上海和台湾上演了精彩的演出。

 

在约翰?莫里斯?罗素的带领下,希尔顿黑德交响乐团也获得了前所未有的艺术成就;音乐会场场爆满,演出场次比过去增长了一倍。罗素先生指导乐团每年奉献八场年度大师作品定期音乐会,同时与温莎交响乐团的合作中,他也展示了自己对经典和早期浪漫主义管弦乐艺术的热爱。由于罗素先生的悉心引导,希尔顿黑德交响乐团与地区团体及音乐表演艺术家的合作更为密切,提升了管弦乐团的知名度和演出品质,演出合作单位包括希尔顿头舞剧院、查尔斯顿南方大学、萨凡纳儿童合唱团和乔治亚南方大学。此外,罗素先生积极参与、发展推广希尔顿黑德交响乐团“音乐桥”助学计划,组织布拉夫顿郡和希尔顿海德岛地区数以万计的在校学生参加团体汇演和整场管弦音乐会,同时将古勒语的音乐文化和南卡低地地区的音乐传统融合到演出和音乐项目中。

 

2014年秋季,约翰?莫里斯?罗素首次亮相水牛城爱乐乐团,并在之后的演出季被任命为首席流行音乐指挥。同年12月,罗素先生与水牛爱乐合唱团合作推出了一系列广受赞誉的假日流行音乐会,同时还与爵士歌唱家迪?丹尼尔斯、致敬约翰?丹佛艺术家吉姆?卡瑞开展合作举办音乐会,开启了自己的音乐职业生涯。上一个演出季中,罗素先生担任水牛城爱乐乐团的指挥,指挥了迪士尼幻想曲现场音乐会、Cirque de la Symphonie交响乐团音乐会、奥斯卡颁奖典礼之夜、水牛爱乐合唱团特色演唱会水牛爱唱、以及假日流行音乐会,2018至2019演出季,他将继续担任水牛城爱乐乐团的指挥,即将指挥格什温、摩城音乐、超级英雄、沙丁鱼、美国致礼以及年度假日流行音乐会。

 

作为客座指挥,罗素先生与多个北美知名团体开展过合作,包括洛杉矶爱乐乐团、克利夫兰交响乐团、纽约爱乐乐团、波士顿流行交响乐团、以及华盛顿国家交响乐团。他还多次指挥加拿大交响乐团的演出,包括多伦多、艾德蒙顿、卡尔加里、温哥华、维多利亚和基秦拿-滑铁卢,与伦敦交响乐团也有合作,还有美国的交响乐团,包括底特律、休斯敦、印第安纳波利斯、达拉斯、路易斯维尔、密尔沃基、迈阿密新世界交响乐团、明尼苏达管弦乐团、奥勒冈交响乐团、科罗拉多交响乐团、新泽西交响乐团以及纽约市芭蕾舞团。罗素先生与国际知名乐团也有合作,曾经在著名的维也纳金色大厅担任音乐会指挥,以哈莱姆童声合唱团、维也纳童声合唱团和知名男影星格里高利·派克为特色。演出在欧洲、日本以及美国公共电视网等多地电视台播放。

 

担任温莎交响乐团音乐总监(2001-2012)期间,罗素先生引领乐团十余年,乐团获得了前所谓有的艺术成长,同时丰富了温莎雅斯郡地区的音乐活动,共举办了17场CBC全国广播直播,与CBC合作打造的系列节目“首演之夜”是该剧团第一个全国电视直播剧,之后还获得了格莱美奖提名。罗素先生指导温莎交响乐团2006年录制的普罗科菲耶夫经典名作“彼德与狼”首次获得朱诺奖2008年度最佳儿童音乐专辑提名。两次荣获安大略副总督艺术奖、安省文化艺术委员会颁发的维达佩恩卓越艺术奖,罗素先生还荣获了温莎和埃塞克斯郡多元文化艺术委员会颁发的Herb Gray Harmony Award,褒奖他为温莎交响乐团2010年众多音乐项目和外联活动做出的杰出贡献。同年,罗素先生获得温莎艺术基金颁发的艺术领袖奖,成为第一位该奖项的获得者,褒奖他对该地区文化生活做出的卓越贡献,2011年春季,温莎大学授予约翰?莫里斯?罗素荣誉法学博士学位。

约翰?莫里斯?罗素先生同时担任辛辛那提交响乐团的副指挥、萨凡纳交响乐团副指挥、范德堡大学交响乐团团长以及马萨诸塞法尔茅斯大学轻歌剧社团音乐总监。他拥有洛杉矶南加州大学音乐指挥学硕士学位,马萨诸塞州威廉姆斯学院音乐学士学位,并曾在伦敦市政厅音乐戏剧学院、克里夫兰音乐学院、科罗拉多阿斯本音乐节、以及缅因州汉考克皮埃尔蒙都音乐指挥家学院进修。

 

The 2018/2019 season marks John Morris Russell’s eighth as Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops, one of Cincinnati’s most treasured assets and one of the world’s most respected pops orchestras.  Consistently winning international praise for his extraordinary music-making and visionary leadership, he is also Music Director of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina where he leads the classical subscription series as well as the prestigious Hilton Head International Piano Competition. Mr. Russell also serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, following in the footsteps of Marvin Hamlisch and Doc Severinsen.  John Morris Russell completed his eleven-year tenure as Music Director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in Ontario, Canada in 2012, whereupon he was named that orchestra’s first Conductor Laureate.

 

With his position at the Cincinnati Pops, Mr. Russell leads sold-out performances at Music Hall, the Taft Theater, and Riverbend Music Center; additionally, he conducts the orchestra in concerts throughout the Greater Cincinnati region as well as domestic and international tours—serving as a musical ambassador to cultivate the reputation of the Cincinnati region as one of the world’s leading cultural centers. Creator of the orchestra’s Classical Roots series, he also conducts the Pops family concert series, the annual USO Tribute Cincinnati Gala, and has led, with CSO Music Director Louis Langree, the wildly successful “Lumenocity” performances over the last four summers. Mr. Russell’s recent collaborations include Aretha Franklin, Amy Grant and Vince Gill, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael McDonald, Ann Hampton Callaway, George Takei, Megan Hilty, Steve Martin, Edie Brickell and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Brian Wilson and Jason Alexander. The Cincinnati Pops recorded legacy continues under Mr. Russell’s leadership, including Home for the Holidays (2012), Superheroes! (2013), Carnival of the Animals (2014) and the first live recording of the Pops, American Originals (2015) and in 2018, American Originals II.   Beginning in 2016 Mr. Russell conducted The Pops in a new video series “American Soundscapes”, captured live by CET Public Television, taking Pops performances around the globe via YouTube. In December 2014 Mr. Russell led the Cincinnati Pops on their first-ever Florida tour, and in March of 2017 he led the sixth Pops tour to Asia including performances in Shanghai and Taiwan.

 

At the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, under John Morris Russell’s leadership, the orchestra has enjoyed unprecedented artistic growth; concert attendance has blossomed and the orchestra has doubled the number of concerts they present.  Mr. Russell leads the orchestra in eight masterwork subscription concerts annually, and as with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, he continues to reveal his deep passion for Classical and early Romantic orchestral literature. Under his guidance the HHSO has sparked collaborations with regional ensembles and performers that continue to widen the reach of the orchestra, including Hilton Head Dance Theatre, Charleston Southern University, the Savannah Children’s Choir, and Georgia Southern University. In addition, Mr. Russell has been actively involved in the development of the HHSO “Music Bridges” program, engaging thousands of school children from Bluffton to Hilton Head Island in ensemble visits and full orchestra concerts, while integrating the musical culture of Gullah and Lowcountry traditions into presentations and programming.

 

John Morris Russell made his debut with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in the fall of 2014, and later that season was named Principal Pops Conductor. The following December, Mr. Russell began his tenure with a series of highly successful Holidays Pops concerts along with the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, as well as concerts with jazz diva Dee Daniels and John Denver Tribute artist Jim Curry. Last season, Mr. Russell conducted the BPO in Disney Fantasia Live in Concert, Cirque de la Symphonie, A Night at the Oscars, Buffalo Sings! again featuring the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus as well as Holiday Pops while in the 2018/2019 season he conducts the BPO in Gershwin, Motown, Superheroes, the Hot Sardines, An American Salute, as well as the annual Holiday Pops.

As a guest conductor, Mr. Russell has worked with many of North America’s most distinguished ensembles, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, New York Pops, and the National Symphony of Washington, D.C.  He frequently conducts Canadian orchestras including Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Kitchener-Waterloo and Orchestra London and in the US has led the orchestras of Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Dallas, Louisville, Milwaukee, Miami’s New World Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, Oregon Symphony, Colorado Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, and New York City Ballet.   Abroad, he conducted at the famed Musikverein in Vienna in a concert that featured the Harlem Boychoir, the Vienna Choir Boys and the actor Gregory Peck. The performance continues to be televised throughout Europe, Japan and in the USA on PBS.

 

While Music Director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (2001-2012) Maestro Russell fostered a decade of unprecedented artistic growth and invigorated the musical life of the Windsor-Essex region, including seventeen national broadcasts on CBC Radio 2, and the orchestra’s first nationally televised production for the CBC series Opening Night which later received a Gemini Award Nomination. His 2006 recording of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra won Mr. Russell and the WSO its first Juno nomination for Best Children’s Album in 2008.  A two-time recipient of Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Arts, as well as the Ontario Arts Council’s Vida Peene Award for Artistic Excellence, Mr. Russell received the prestigious Herb Gray Harmony Award by the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County, in recognition of the WSO's programming and outreach activities in 2010.  Later that year, he became the first recipient of the Arts Leadership Award by the Windsor Endowment for the Arts, in recognition of the enormous contribution he made to the region's cultural life, and in the spring of 2011 the University of Windsor awarded John Morris Russell an Honorary Doctor of Law degree.

 

John Morris Russell is widely considered one of North America's leaders in orchestral educational programming. From 1997 to 2009 he conducted the “LinkUP!” educational concert series at Carnegie Hall, the oldest and most celebrated series of its kind, created by Walter Damrosch in 1891 and made famous by Leonard Bernstein. The "Sound Discoveries" series Mr. Russell developed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra remains a leading model for educational concerts. In Windsor, he developed the Peanut Butter n’ Jam series for young children, Family Jamboree and the One Community—One Symphony project that engaged a dozen high school performing ensembles. He also spearheaded the creation of The Windsor-Essex Youth Choir and the Windsor Symphony Youth Orchestra.

 

John Morris Russell has served as Associate Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony, Associate Conductor of the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, Director of the Orchestral Program at Vanderbilt University, and Music Director with the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, Massachusetts. He received a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Williams College in Massachusetts. He has also studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, and the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors in Hancock, Maine.
